God has implanted in our hearts the desire to reach the Italian people with the
gospel of Christ. Our call is to see living, breathing, evangelical churches planted
in Italy that would be capable of reproducing themselves, beginning in Trieste.
"Why plant a church in Italy?" you might ask. To start with, the statistical evidence
is startling. (Check out the 'Why Italy?' section below to see what I mean.) Yet the
bottom line is that the gospel is not preached in Italy.
To further understand the need you must understand that, just as in many other
countries around the world, Catholicism in Italy is not the same as it is in the United
States. Italians are taught from childhood that there is no salvation apart from the
Church and that they can only obtain Catholic, and with that they are given a false
hope that their performance will gain them salvation.
Despite the strong Catholic upbringing, many of the young people are leaving the
Catholic Church and the traditions of their parents and grandparents to find
answers elsewhere. Unfortunately, with such a small evangelical witness, they turn
to the occult to find their answers. Italy has an estimated 100,000 full time,
practicing witches and warlocks.
Romans 10:14-15 says "How then shall they call on him in whom they have not
believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And
how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they
be sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel
of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!""

communities unreached. - Though 77% of Italy's population is Roman Catholic, 20% now claim to be non-religious. Many, having
left the Catholic church now search for answers within the occult. - Italy has an estimated 100,000 (yes one hundred thousand) full-time witches and warlocks, nearly three
times the number of Catholic priests in Italy. - The northern city of Turin (location of the 2006 winter Olympics) is a global center for occultism.
- The northern provinces of Umbria, Trentino, Lombardy, and Emilia-Romagna have less than 0.1%
evangelical population. - The northeastern Veneto Region has less than 0.046% evangelical population.
- Italy's attrition rate is very high, with only 10% of all missionaries that go to Italy returning for a second
term.
